Every autumn, the skies above Albuquerque, New Mexico come alive with color during the International Balloon Fiesta — one of the most breathtaking spectacles in the world. Living on Kirtland Air Force Base, I had a front-row seat to the magic. Balloons from across the globe would drift overhead, and sometimes they'd drift low enough to land right near my home.

I was so captivated by their beauty against the wide New Mexico sky that I picked up my brush and let the watercolors do the talking. Up, Up, & Away is one of those paintings — a celebration of color, freedom, and the quiet wonder of watching something so enormous float so gracefully.
