VP-56 Dragons Over Iceland - Fine Art Print
Some art is made in a studio. This one was made in Iceland, land of ice and fire.
This pen and ink drawing captures a Lockheed P-3 Orion — the turboprop anti-submarine and maritime surveillance aircraft that flew with VP-56 (Dragons) — rendered with the precision of someone who watched these aircraft up close during their deployments. I was much younger then and painted furiously during those long dark Icelandic winter months. I have my earlier signature, before Cecil was Cecil. Little did I know, I would be stationed with VP-24 later in life.
There's something rare in a piece like this: the authenticity of being there — on the flight line, in the cold, with ink and paper — capturing a working aircraft doing its actual job over the North Atlantic.
